Random House Children's names new chief

Dr. Seuss, meet Harry Potter. Barbara Marcus, the former president of children's book publishing at Scholastic—the U.S. home of the Hogwarts wizard—has been named president and publisher of Random House Children's Books. The world's largest children's house publishes The Cat in the Hat and every other Dr. Seuss title, along with scores of other brand name books, including the Thomas the Tank Engine series and the Inheritance Cycle, by Christopher Paolini. Ms. Marcus, who spent 22 years at Scholastic before resigning in 2005, oversaw the U.S. acquisition of J.K. Rowling's series and the publication of six of the seven Potter novels. The executive is credited with growing the company's publishing and distribution revenues to $1.2 billion from $120 million. For the past seven years she has worked as a consultant, most recently for digital publisher Open Road, where she will remain on the advisory board. "I did think I was finished" with running a publishing house, Ms. Marcus said of her departure from Scholastic. "But I have found my consulting... Continue reading at 'Crains New York'
