Different Coin, Equal Sum: Translating the Kopilka Poetry of Witness and Antiwar Protest, by Yana Kane On Translation [email protected] Thu, 03/28/2024 - 08:12 Photo by chayanit / Adobe StockAfter being “struck mute” in Russian, her first language, after the February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the author doubled down on the “life-giving and historically significant” role of poetry in russophone culture during the past two years. The current wave of russophone poetry of witness and protest is written by and for people who are confronting a catastrophe. The poet may compose a poem—and readers and listeners may encounter it—while sitting in a bomb shelter in Ukraine, while under arrest in Russia, while leaving their home for fear of annihilation or detention, while trying to continue their life in a lull between attacks, or trying to build it anew in a foreign environment and amidst the challenges of a refugee’s existence. The Russian regime’s horrific war against Ukraine, and the Russian and Belarusian states’ catastrophic slide into full-blown totalitarianism, are fracturing the very foundations of the Russian language and russophone culture—just as they are shattering individual human lives.
