The current wave of russophone poetry of witness and protest is written by and for people who are confronting a catastrophe. The poet may compose a poem—and readers and listeners may encounter it—while sitting in a bomb shelter in Ukraine, while under arrest in Russia, while leaving their home for fear of annihilation or detention, while trying to continue their life in a lull between attacks, or trying to build it anew in a foreign environment and amidst the challenges of a refugee’s existence. The Russian regime’s horrific war against Ukraine, and the Russian and Belarusian states’ catastrophic slide into full-blown totalitarianism, are fracturing the very foundations of the Russian language and russophone culture—just as they are shattering individual human lives.
