Staff Union, Lifehacker EIC Rebuke G/O Media Over Firing of Travel Writer

The editor-in-chief of Lifehacker and a union representing staffers at the site each blasted parent company G/O Media on Friday over the abrupt firing of the site's travel writer—the latest in a long string of public disputes between management and staff at the one-year-old digital media company. Staff writer Imani Bashir was terminated Friday afternoon without severance pay or an offer of extended health benefits, the union said, after G/O Media claimed that it could not support international employment—despite hiring her as an international employee only four months ago. "Her lifestyle of moving to different countries was celebrated when she was offered the job, and it was communicated to her that this added value to the role," read a statement from the GMG Union, which represents more than 100 editorial staffers at several former Gawker Media sites now under the G/O Media umbrella. Responding to the statement Friday evening, Lifehacker EIC Alice Bradley sided with the union, calling the decision "outrageous" and accusing management at G/O Media of going behind her back to fire Bashir.
