They are a professor of Chinese literature and media at Australian National University. Veronica Esposito: Although transgender activism in the modern era dates back at least to the nineteenth century—and evidence of transpeople has been found at some of the oldest human settlements on Earth—it’s become popular to talk about how the transgender community has “come out” in recent years. And while it is true that we have expanded our visibility and the visibility of our fight for equal rights, one area where this expansion seems to be lacking is in the world of translated literature. I, for one, rarely see trans protagonists, or even characters, despite their increasing normalization in other media like TV, movies, and even nontranslated literature. Why do you think this is? When you treat the act of translation metaphorically, you take on the burdens of metaphor’s collateral vocabulary.
