New York Times Co., the newspaper publisher controlled by the Ochs-Sulzberger family, reported second-quarter profit that beat analysts' estimates as it drew more subscribers for its digital editions.Excluding some items, profit was 14 cents a share, the company said today in a statement. Analysts had projected 13 cents on average, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Circulation sales, including readers of both print and digital products, rose 5.1%. The Times' advertising business, meanwhile, has declined for 11 straight quarters, falling 5.8% in the latest period.The publisher, led by Chairman Arthur Sulzberger and Chief Executive Officer Mark Thompson, is focusing more on attracting paying subscribers to depend less on advertisers, who have cut spending industrywide over the past five years. The company is also selling off all assets unrelated to the Times media brand, culminating in its decision to put the Boston Globe newspaper group up for sale earlier this year.Sales fell 0.9% to $485.4 million.
