Building on the success of its Pulitzer Prize winning interactive article "Snow Fall," the New York Times will launch what it's calling "an immersive digital magazine experience."Sam Sifton, the former Times food critic-turned national editor, will lead the project. At the same time, he will develop a new digital product involving dining news. The new projects were revealed in an internal memo sent out Friday by Executive Editor Jill Abramson and continued her efforts to strengthen the digital edition of the paper as company revenue and profits continue to fall.The multimedia magazine appears to complement Need to Know, the working title for what will be the first in a suite of lower-priced digital products coming out later this year and next. New CEO Mark Thompson announced plans for the new paid products as part of a growth strategy laid out by the Times Co. in April. Deputy Metro Editor Clifford Levy has been assigned to edit Need to Know.One analyst called the initiatives a positive step for the paper but overdue."Anything to improve and broaden the online product and get more people to pick it up" is good, said Edward Atorino, a media analyst with The Benchmark Co.
