A politically involved Bronx-based physician network received $29 million from a state fund formerly reserved for distressed hospitals and nursing homes, a new report found.SOMOS Community Care, a nonprofit physician network based in Kingsbridge, received funds from the Vital Access Provider Assurance Program, a $2.9 billion Medicaid program originally designed to aid financially struggling hospitals and nursing homes, according to a report released by the Albany-based think tank Empire Center for Public Policy on Monday.Changes to the Medicaid program enacted in the 2023 budget process expanded the program to other types of providers and may have allowed SOMOS to uniquely benefit — so much so that the state included a specific budget line to funnel money to the organization, state documents obtained by the Empire Center show.Bill Hammond, a senior health policy fellow with the Empire Center and author of the report, said that the funding to SOMOS comes as its leaders and affiliated physicians ramped up their campaign contributions. The organization has been tied to $2.2 million in campaign donations over the last decade, the report shows.“I thought that was kind of provocative that you would see a big surge in campaign donations from people associated with this medical group, and then see it getting a $29 million grant which kind of stretches the definition of what a distressed provider is,” Hammond said. “It just raises the question of how the Health Department...
