New NY Times CEO could make $10.5M

The New York Times Co. named former BBC director general Mark Thompson as its new CEO earlier this week, and now comes word that he will receive a pay package totaling as much as $10.5 million, including an annual salary of $1 million, according to Bloomberg News. Mr. Thompson, who was previously the British Broadcasting Corp.'s director general, can make as much as $4.5 million from his signing bonus, $2 million in annual incentives and $3 million in long-term incentives, Bloomberg News reported. The 161-year-old publisher, faced with declining advertising revenue from its print editions, has been trying to boost revenue from digital products. Last year, it began charging for online access to The New York Times and The Boston Globe newspapers. The company hopes Mr. Thompson can help revive sales growth and accelerate a shift to the Internet, Bloomberg News said. The new pay package is a raise for Mr. Thompson, who had reportedly received $976,000 in total compensation for his most recent year at the BBC. Bloomberg News contributed to this article.
