Dr. Seuss, meet Harry Potter. Barbara Marcus, the former president of children's book publishing at Scholastic—the U.S. home of the Hogwarts wizard—has been named president and publisher of Random House Children's Books. The world's largest children's house publishes The Cat in the Hat and every other Dr. Seuss title, along with scores of other brand name books, including the Thomas the Tank Engine series and the Inheritance Cycle, by Christopher Paolini. Ms. Marcus's appointment, announced Wednesday by Random House, is effective immediately. She succeeds Chip Gibson, a 30-year veteran of Random House who has headed the children's division for the past decade. Mr. Gibson said he planned to take a break and do "nothing" for a while. A former head of the company's Crown Publishing Group and an adviser to Random House CEO Markus Dohle, he marked his 30th year at Random House in February. Ms. Marcus, who spent 22 years at Scholastic before resigning in 2005, oversaw the U.S. acquisition of J.K. Rowling's series and the publication of six of the seven Potter novels. The executive is credited with growing the company's publishing and distribution revenues to $1.2 billion from $120 million. For the past seven years she has worked as a consultant, most recently for digital publisher Open Road, where she will remain on the advisory board.
