Did BuzzFeed Go Too Far in Publishing a Salacious, Unverified Report About Donald Trump?

On Tuesday evening, BuzzFeed chose to publish 35 pages of documents about President-elect Donald Trump. Those documents contain, as BuzzFeed reported, "memos written over a period of months, [including] specific, unverified and potentially unverifiable allegations of contact between Trump aides and Russian operatives, and graphic claims of sexual acts documented by the Russians." The online publisher clearly stated in its post, written by three of its top investigative reporters with help from its data collection team, that these claims were all unsubstantiated and unverified.  Other U.S. media outlets, including CNN and Mother Jones, published teasers of the content but not the entire dossier. Not only do the documents, which are still not proven to be true, contain allegations that the Russian government worked with Trump or his team to throw the election in his favor, they also discuss explicit blackmail material Russia allegedly has on Trump, referred to as "kompromat." Now, many are questioning whether publishing the information was the right move. On one hand: some journalists claim the packet was swirling around Washington as early as November, and was sent to President Barack Obama and Trump last week in separate security briefings. On the other, news outlets haven't been able to confirm the veracity of the report.  Trump, soon after the... Continue reading at 'AdWeek'
