Manchester United legend's bestselling memoir pushed from the top of books chart by Jeff Kinney's weedy heroHis protagonist is a lazy schoolboy weakling, Greg Heffley, but now children's author Jeff Kinney has shoved the big man of football off the top spot in the UK official book chart.Hard Luck, the eighth in Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, has sold 82,999 copies in the past week, compared with 73,572 for My Autobiography, by former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson.Kinney also pushed Demon Dentist, by celebrity children's author David Walliams, to number two in the children's book chart. Hard Luck's sales were the biggest achieved by a children's book in a single week since Kinney's previous title, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel, sold 91,000 copies in November 2012, industry magazine the Bookseller has reported .Kinney's publishing stock has risen rapidly in the seven-and-a-half years since the first of his Wimpy Kid books was released in April 2007. The author, who originally aspired to be a newspaper cartoonist, was signed up by New York publisher Harry N Abrams after building a following by self-publishing his work in digital instalments.The Wimpy Kid books have sold more than 75m copies and are translated into 41 languages, putting them ahead of AA Milne's Winnie the Pooh series – which has sold 70m copies worldwide – but behind Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit series (170m) and JK Rowling's Harry Potter (450m).
