It was the kind of book editors dream about: from the first page, the author has you sweating, and by the time you come out the other side you’re blinking away the tears. It was a brilliant work of fiction with an exceptional voice, and we weren’t alone in loving it: Donal Ryan’s The Spinning Heart picked up the Guardian first book award, the EU prize for literature, and a couple of Irish Book Awards. It even got a Man Booker longlist nod.
