As a stopgap and communal gesture, the mini food donation boxes are great. But they also point out a much larger issue: Food insecurity is on the rise–and can’t be solved by charitable donations alone. Around two years ago, Jessica McClard noticed three Little Free Libraries–tiny, community-organized book-giveaway hutches–pop up in her middle-class neighborhood in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
