West Coast ice cream shop Salt & Straw will be dishing out its first scoops in the Northeast this weekend after opening its inaugural Manhattan location Friday, Sept. 20.Backed by prolific restaurateur Danny Meyer, founder and executive chairman of Union Square Hospitality Group and the man behind Shake Shack, the Portland, Oregon-founded ice cream company is making its Upper West Side debut at 360 Amsterdam Ave. Meyer serves as a partner and adviser to the brand.Co-founders and cousins Kim and Tyler Malek started Salt & Straw by selling ice cream out of a single food cart in the Beaver State in 2011. Eleven of Salt & Straw's classic flavors, such as Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Honey Lavender, and Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper, also will be available.Kim Malek, who lives in Portland but visits the city regularly, told Crain's Thursday that the new shop has been a long time coming. She and Tyler Malek, an award-winning chef and the... Continue reading at 'Crains New York'
