The case for publisher subrights teams

In her column, Wrongs of Rights, literary agent Clare Alexander says she believes no rights department in publishing has "the necessary skills any more" to sell rights. Aside from my team, who work incredibly hard to help acquire and then sell our authors to as many territories as possible, I greatly admire the successes of many other publishers' subrights teams: from Penguin to Little, Brown to Cannongate to Orion to HarperCollins (to name just a few).
