An online start-up in south London is launching a crowdfunded print version tomorrow. The Croydon Citizen is publishing a free news magazine, which will be distributed at the borough's railway stations and main shopping areas.Editor-in-chief James Naylor says the 16-page magazine, which will be written and edited by citizen contributors, is "the perfect commuter read that complements already established publications rather than competing with them." The first issue has been financed through a crowdfunding campaign using a locally-run platform, wearethemillion.com. It exceeded its £2,000 target by more than 20%.Naylor said: "The support we have received shows that contrary to popular belief, local news is far from dead. There is a highly engaged and committed audience that believes in us and is willing to support us with their time and hard-earned money."The Croydon Citizen went live about 12 months ago. It has an editorial team of five and some 70 contributors.Sources: Croydon Citizen/Croydon GazetteDigital mediaCrowdfundingLondonRegional & local newspapersRoy Greensladetheguardian.com © 2013 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
