Online and in print, magazine launches tumble

Only 23 magazines launched in the first quarter of 2013, compared with 44 in the same period a year ago, but the number of titles that shut down between Jan. 1 and the end of March also dropped, according to figures released Monday by online database MediaFinder.com.The new titles include Condé Nast's Glam Belleza Latina, a beauty magazine spinoff of Glamour. There are also two new titles that grew out of digital publications: a quarterly magazine from subscription site Politico Pro and a monthly edition devoted to long-form journalism from Web journal NSFW Corp.MediaFinder's quarterly figures represent a sort of half-dry Polaroid snapshot of the magazine industry. The numbers leave out, for instance, two Hamptons magazines—Beach, from Modern Luxury, and Avenue at the Beach from Manhattan Media—that will launch Memorial Day. But the stats suggest a big drop-off in activity for the magazine format in both print and digital media."Media companies are trying to cut costs, and there seems to be more interest in mergers and acquisitions and selloffs [than in launching titles]," said Trish Hagood, president of MediaFinder.com, referring to Meredith Corp.'s interest in acquiring most of Time Inc.'s titles and the eventual decision by Time Warner to spinoff its publishing division.Only four digital-only publications launched in the quarter, including Newsweek Global and Maura Magazine, a pop culture weekly from Manhattan startup 29th Street Publishing. Eight digital-only titles... Continue reading at 'Crains New York'
