The National Book Awards in recent years has been working to raise its profile and increase books' cultural impact. Now it's taking another step toward extending its reach. The National Book Foundation, which administers the prizes, will announce Monday that the 2013 awards ceremony and benefit dinner will be hosted by MSNBC morning-show anchors Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough.On Oct. 16, the Morning Joe co-hosts will also announce on the air the five finalists in each of the four award categories—a feature that was inaugurated last year and which more than doubled traffic to the foundation's website that day, albeit to a still-modest 22,000 visitors.While it's no Oprah, Morning Joe regularly covers books, and last month started a nonfiction book club. The hosts, said foundation Chairman and Perseus Books Group CEO David Steinberger, fit right in with what the National Book Awards is doing: "If you want to reach the broader culture, they are the perfect vehicle."The changes have been inspired partly by the publishing community's admiration for Britain's Man Booker Prize—which is celebrated enough for London's bookies to set odds on the winner—and partly from a feeling that the awards needed to do more to get noticed.
