What did you do in the war? It was one of the most salient questions of the 20th century, as pregnant with harrowing implications as it was innocent. Now, as we complete the first decade of the new century, it bears repeating. Because we—we as citizens and humans and especially we of the press—are at war. It is a war we did not start, but one that must be fought to the finish. It is a war against truth, against freedom and against a future for our grandchildren. In short, everything that matters. Bizarrely, but unsurprisingly, it is a war in which we—the media—have been cast as the enemy. The enemy of the people. Us. Not the authoritarians. Not the frauds. Not the demagogues. Not the purveyors of Big Lies and small ones. Not the conspiracy peddlers. Not the constitution wreckers. Not the BFFs of murderous adversaries. Not the coddlers of war criminals. Not the convicted administration felons. Not the cagers of small children. Not the congressional Soldiers of Oz who—even as their branch of government is being obstructed in its constitutional duties—have taken on the vilification of all those who would question the Wizard’s conduct. And, by the way, not just the press. Also the intelligence agencies, the Justice Department, the judiciary, the FBI, the State Department, the National Security Council, the Pentagon, the National Weather Service, immigrants, Gold Star families, women, the LGBT community, academia, science, Christianity Today and—whaddya call it—reality....
