Fewer new magazines, fewer closures this year

and Matthew Flamm - The magazine industry saw slightly fewer launches in the first quarter of 2012, compared to a year ago, but—on the positive side—there were many fewer closures, according to a survey released Monday by MediaFinder, the online database of U.S. and Canadian publications. Not surprisingly, the numbers also showed more magazines launching as digital-only titles.MediaFinder counted 43 new print titles and nine new online magazines for the quarter. A year ago, the number of launches came to 50 print and four digital. Some of the new digital titles, like American Athlete, are iPad-only, while Professional Yacht Broker is available online as a PDF. “We're going to see more and more of that,” said MediaFinder President Trish Hagood. “There's no postage or printing costs.” Restaurant-related titles comprised the top category for launches, helped by five DiningOut guides from Pearl Publishing. Lifestyle also got a boost, with four titles, including the launch of Bloomberg Pursuits and a revival of Time Inc.'s Time Style & Design. “It must be because the economy is improving,” Ms. Hagood said. “Luxury magazines are roaring back.” Only 11 print titles and one digital magazine folded during the quarter—an improvement on a year ago, when 23 print titles and one online magazine shut down.
