Carly Simon, the singer and songwriter who has had a rocky life and a storied career, has sold her autobiography to Random House for a sum in the seven figures, according to a person familiar with the deal. Ms. Simon, the author of several children's books, is writing the memoir herself. It's not yet clear when the book will be published, but Ms. Simon told Reuters in April that she planned to finish the book by the end of the year. The sale represents a coup for Random House Publisher Susan Kamil, who made the acquisition, and for Ms. Simon's agent, Betsy Lerner. Publishers have long been interested in having the singer regale audiences with her life's story. Her father, Richard Simon, co-founded Simon & Schuster. And her hit songs include "You're So Vain." But until now a deal had remained out of reach. In 2009, Ms. Simon met with editors at her home on Martha's Vineyard, but her agent at the time had set a price tag on her autobiography of $3 million, which turned out to be too high. "This is a book that could really work," said a publishing executive who met with Ms. Simon in 2009. Memoirs by aging rock stars have proved a fairly reliable genre for publishers in recent years, with Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan all producing bestsellers.
