Scrabble is a game that puts on airs. It’s more than a living-room pastime, its partisans argue. Played at the highest level, it’s as complex as chess. Scrabble is so strategically sophisticated, in fact, that—as readers of Slate contributor Stefan Fatsis’ best-selling book Word Freak know—there is a national Scrabble championship.
