In June 1975, ahead of the previous European Union referendum on whether the United Kingdom should remain in the European Economic Community, publisher George Weidenfeld argued that the “close connections between British and European publishers and retail organisations” would be “valuable to the British book trade” and were more likely to be successful with Britain in the EEC.
