International Prize for Arabic Fiction Shortlist Announcement

The shortlist for the 2019 International Prize for Arabic Fiction was announced today at the El-Hakawati Palestinian National Theatre in East Jerusalem. The IPAF - often referred to as the ‘Arabic Booker’ - is an annual literary prize for prose fiction, which encourages the readership of high-quality Arabic literature internationally. This year, the twelfth edition, is no exception, with an enticing range of subject matter covered in the six shortlisted novels, whittled-down from 134 submitted to the prize. The 2019 shortlisted books (in alphabetical order) are: Hoda Barakat: The Night Mail, Lebanon Dar al-Adab Adel Esmat: The Commandments, Egypt, Kotob Khan Inaam Kachachi, The Outcast, Iraq, Dar al-Jadid Mohammed Al-Maazuz: What Sin Caused her to Die? Morocco, Cultural Book Centre Shahla Ujayli: Summer with the Enemy, Syria, Difaf Publishing Kafa Al-Zou’bi: Cold White Sun, Jordan, Dar al-Adab This year, a record four women make the list. Of these, three have been recognised by the prize before, including Inaam Kachachi (shortlisted for The American Granddaughter in 2009 and again in 2014 for Tashari); Shahla Ujayli (shortlisted for A Sky Close to Our House in 2016); and Lebanese Hoda Barakat (longlisted for The Kingdom of the Earth in 2013). The shortlist was selected... Continue reading at 'British Council global'
