Storm spawns new weekly paper

Local newspaper publisher NYC Community Media, which fled its Canal Street home last week and is now publishing from 1 MetroTech Center in Brooklyn, is putting its experience as a storm-driven nomad to use. On Friday, it will launch a weekly paper called NYC Reconnects, and a website, NYCReconnects.com, aimed at helping lower Manhattan recover from the storm. Community Media's new owner and publisher Jennifer Goodstein told Crain's on Tuesday that she intends to publish the weekly for several months, or "until people are back where they need to be." The company is printing 30,000 copies of NYC Reconnects, which will be distributed free below 23rd Street in street boxes, apartment building lobbies and some retail outlets. The publisher puts out five papers that target lower Manhattan and Chelsea, including Downtown Express, The Villager and Gay City News. "It's really neighbors helping neighbors," Ms. Goodstein said of the new publication. "We're helping organizations and service groups connect to those in need as well as providing information for people who want volunteer opportunities." Articles will focus on how individuals have coped with Sandy and its aftermath. The paper will also provide a comprehensive guide to resources for everything from food and housing to activities for keeping children busy.
