State officials are funneling hundreds of millions to community health providers as the state begins its long-awaited Medicaid experiment, which will use the public health dollars in ways they haven’t been used before.Nine regional organizations, including three in the city, are set to receive $500 million over the next three years to coordinate the state’s long-awaited Medicaid pilot program, known as the 1115 waiver, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Wednesday.The $7.5-billion-program is designed to test new ways for New York to use Medicaid dollars, including on rent payments, fresh produce and non-medical transportation.The awardees will operate social care networks, which will be responsible for screening the state’s 7 million-plus Medicaid enrollees and connecting them with social services. The networks will also work with a dedicated Medicaid plan to coordinate payments among other community-based organizations that provide housing, nutrition assistance and transportation. Organizations tapped to run the 1115 waiver networks range from physician associations to public health nonprofits.
