It’s supposed to be a compliment. The question is posed so earnestly that I – rather than taking offence – have learned to contort myself to accommodate the expectations of the middle-class people who ask it.When they pose the query, they clearly have no idea of the subtext sizzling between the lines, which is: “I don’t expect a scruff like you to be capable of stringing a sentence together.” Then again, for many middle-class people in the UK, especially those working in the media, it appears that life is just one big TED talk.
